A Spring Forecast….

This spring, the forecast calls for bold, graphic cuts styled into soft, feminine shapes inspired by iconic personalities of the late 20th century. To kick off your creative inspiration, put images of Uma Thurman in Kill Bill and Madonna from the early ‘80s on your creative boards, then jam away to some ‘90s grunge music, says Antoinette Beenders and the Aveda Artistic Team.

Ashley, shown above, is a prime example of how a talented stylist who knows what they are doing can make all the difference. Ashley came to the Salon with a super cute but slightly overgrown bob and (gasp!) box color, so we immediately sat her down for a makeover cut and color. It was through talent and capablity that Ashley emerged with a trendy Box Bob and X-Pattern Highlights in varying shades of vibrant red, both of which are techniques taught to our stylists.

Are you a Natural Woman?

Going au natural is in - and we’re not talking about running around in your birthday suit!!

Maybe it’s a sign of the times, or maybe women are embracing the looks that their mammas gave them, but we couldn’t help but notice that on the Golden Globes and SAG Awards red carpets, many of Hollywood’s leading ladies donned haircolor hues much closer to their natural shades.

We noticed a lot of celebs have returned to their more natural haircolors. For example, Kate Hudson’s color was a nice golden blonde with lighter, brighter pieces around her face only. We also noticed Hollywood brunettes and redheads were becoming less high-maintenance, too, i.e. stars daunting the darker chocolate browns, like Tina Fey. For the redheads, we take a cue from Amy Adams, whose color is always rich and vibrant, but still low-key.

The “Silver Fox”

The 2010 Grammy Awards certainly did not disappoint us this past Sunday night. From the good (Gaga and Elton John) to the bad (ahem, Britney’s dress) to the awkward (too many to list), the evening was packed with one eye-popping spectacle after another!

New Attitude was of course affixed on the hair; and amidst the sea of long, wavy and natural, Rihanna and Pink’s ultra-glam, ultra-feminine Mohawks caught our attention!!

These diva’s have been rocking their punked-out coifs for a while, but Pink surprised us with a splash of an unexpected color. Her perfectly platinum hair was tipped with silver, a subtle yet beautiful transition. Paired with an elegant ombre’ mermaid gown, understated makeup and sparkly accessories, Pink definitely takes our vote and award for most fearlessly fashionable!

Not only was it one of the funniest episodes in recent memory, but Keibler did a memorable turn as the hot bartender with great hair who made Barney turn away from his beloved suits.

When it comes to color, the main thing we do is maintain a true color, in this case blonde, without tipping over the edge into the realm of too yellow, too bright, too solid or too unnatural. To do that, we highlight the hair with a really fine weave of alternating colors.

The most important thing is to ‘brick lay’ through the crown, through the part and the bangs. This means that the way you place foils are like bricks, they overlap. The foils are not in big rows. That’s really how we’re able to get it to look seamless.

Depending on the season, we may add more lowlights for a winter blond, then remove lowlights altogether in the summer. The important thing is to make everything look natural.

Once we’ve achieved your perfect color, we can keep it that way each time. New Attitude Stylists are very careful when going back over the head at later appointments, making sure not to relighten previously lightened hair. It is important to know that when you keep applying color over and over again, breakage occurs.
