Actress Emma Stone turned heads on the Golden Globes red carpet with her Bordeaux colored Lanvin gown, smoky eyes and her romantic, yet rough-edged hair style.

Celebrity stylist Mara Roszak created The Help star’s style, using a trio of hair helpers. In this weeks blog post by Modern Salon, she revealed her goal to create an edgy, effortless effect with Stone’s ‘do, while keeping the young actress looking feminine. We think she nailed it!! Last Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards helped kick off the 2012 awards season, but, more importantly, it also kicked off another season of fabulous red-carpet hair, aka the Super Bowl of celebrity style.

People’s Choice Awards: Bouncy Blowouts and Cool Brown Shades

The 2012 People’s Choice Awards turned into a beauty face-off as America’s beloved A-listers showcased two prominent trends on the red carpet.

Wella Professionals’ Celebrity Stylist Andy LeCompte said “glamorous, bouncy blowouts” that were “perfect red carpet hair” this season were highlights of the red carpet. While subtle simplicity, warm tones and natural beauty were reigning themes, there was a clear divide between the multi-dimensional, wavy blondes and the super sleek, lustrous brunettes.

Host Kaley Cuoco, Miley Cyrus, Faith Hill, and Julianne Hough all demonstrated the modern yet wildly feminine look—the gradual, three-dimensional color mixed with soft waves gave these ladies maximum definition that left them with a look that was far from forced yet extremely luxurious.

On the other hand, Lea Michele, Nina Dobrev, Whitney Cummings, and Shay Mitchell demonstrated effortless elegance of a whole different kind—straight strands in cool brown shades with fluid texture, volume and a premium finish that was understated and pure.

Knot a Problem!

When Behind The Chair (BTC) published their latest blog post we were most intrigued and when we stumbled upon this updo, we fell in love! But with twists, turns and weaves that almost defy the laws of physics, we asked ourselves, how would we create this beautiful masterpiece, and compared it against professional stylists around the globe.

One technique shared from BTC Corine Triplett: “Prepare your hair by lightly spraying hair with a Hot Sets Thermal Setting Mist and roll hair on-base in bricklayer fashion,” she says. After the hair cools, she suggests applying a light, multi-texture molding wax product throughout the hair, paying close attention to the ends. Create a horizontal parting at the parietal ridge on each side (this will be the largest section) and secure in a loose pony. Separate small sections of the pony and twist, knot or rope braid and pin to create the bottom design. With the remaining hair above the occipital and parietal ridge, mimic your design and work the two sections together. Finally, take the fringe section and create a loose French braid to intertwine in the design. Finally, set with a finishing spray!

Holiday Hair Styles!

Are you in a bind and need a quick hair style idea for the holidays or a last minute party? New Attitude is sharing some quick and easy how-to’s from the Modern Salon blog that will have everyone taking notice of your holiday glamour!

NICOLE KIDMAN’S CHRISTMAS CHIGNON
“Begin by applying a dab of oil to dry hair and create a quick up-do by combing hair back into a low or upper nape ponytail and fasten,” says Celebrity Stylist David Babaii. “Then take various size strands and loop, twist or braid them into and around the base of the hair. Secure with bobby pins. Spray with a flexible hold hair spray to keep in place. Add a decorative pin to finish this party look.”

OLIVIA WILDE’S WINTER WAVES
If you have a busy day ahead, secure all your hair into a messy ponytail. The tighter you fasten and twist the ponytail, the more waves you will achieve. Then spritz it to serve as your first style of the day. This versatile style can work for either work or running errands. For the evening, undo the ponytail and have instant waves and texture like Babaii created for Olivia Wilde below. You can also twist one or both sides up and away from the face or add a decorative headband to finish the style.

TAYLOR SWIFT’S FINGER CURLS
“Begin the look with a classic blow-dry and apply shine serum to locks. Using a one-inch curling iron, section off hair into 2 inch sections and stating from the top of your head, clip hair in iron, hold down and release,” says Celebrity Stylist Nick Penna. “Repeat until you reach the bottom of the hair. Complete the same step through the hair until desired look is achieved. Finish with light hold hair spray.

KATE WINSLET’S UPSWEEP
“A great, jagged texture makes this style youthful and chic at the same time,” says Joico International Creative Director Damien Carney. “To achieve Winslet’s style, apply Joico K-PAK Color Therapy Restorative Styling Oil to damp hair and blow dry with a large round brush, creating lift and volume at the roots. Subdivide hair into two-inch sections, mist with Joico Smooth Cure Thermal Styling Protectant and twirl each section around a styling iron like the K-PAK ReconstRx Vapor Iron to create a wavy texture. Brush all hair to one side of the head and place a line of pins down the center. Roll the hair back in the other direction and pin, covering the first row, tucking the ends out of sight. Spray with hairspray to tame flyaways. Joico.com. TIP: A deep side part is an elegant detail and it hides re-growth.

Winning Hairstyles at the CMA’s!

We’re sharing MODERN SALON TV’s most recent episode where they covered hair-style trends at the Country Music Awards. You may have noticed that the CMAs showcased many up-and-coming looks—here’s what was on their radar in celeb style this season!

Co-host Carrie Underwood stole the show with two hot trends. First, her spot-on buttery blonde. Aura Friedman, Wella Professionals Celebrity Colorist says she’s seeing a shift from cool, platinum blondes to golden and rosy tones—so Carrie’s warm color hits the mark.

Next, Carrie’s pinned-back curly style was a mini-trend echoed by Entertainer of the Year winner Taylor Swift. Taylor’s standard texture got a new twist with this pinned-back look that was especially versatile for her multiple hair and dress changes throughout the show.

In the audience, Nicole Kidman showed off a strawberry blonde shade, which bears a strong resemblance to the peach and rose gold trend that’s on the rise. The key to the on-trend color is the natural dimension, which “makes these shades radiate with an inner glow,” Aura says.

Another major trend set to take off is 1940s retro-glam, as seen on performer Natasha Bedingfield, who rocked a bob with deep side part. Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott wore a longer hair version of the trend: Side-swept locks with a side part and slight wave.
